The recently revised Bundesdatenschutzgesetz (Federal Data Protection Act) stipulates a certain level of self-monitoring for public and private bodies in regards to Data Protection issues. In most cases they are obliged to officially appoint an Internal Data Protection Officer.
In the specific case of private bodies, this is mandatory when they process personal data automatically (with IT) and regularly employ more than five permanent employees for this purpose. The same applies when personal data is processed by other means and at least 20 persons are permanently employed for this purpose.
